What Are You Worth?

Do you like this story?

Post written by Peter G. James Sinclair.

Throughout my illustrious career I have mowed lawns, packed shelves in the early morning and late into the night, and I have scrubbed many a toilet.

Throughout the years I have earned less than $20 an hour and yet have been paid more than a $100,000 for one print run of one of my books.

Right now I am in the midst of negotiating multi-million dollar property development deals.

I have friends who earn between $5,000 and $20,000 dollars for a keynote speech.

My property mentor recently declined an invitation to earn $25,000 for a keynote because he is making too much money doing property deals.

So What Are You Worth?

I remember clearly the day that I decided that I was worth $500 an hour. At that time though I was earning much less than that. But the thought stuck that I was worth much more than I was being paid.

The property deals I am presently working on could earn me from between $20,000 to $40,000 an hour. With ever increasing knowledge and application, that number is beginning to rise quickly.

But to be totally honest, I have been an entrepreneur for so long now – over twenty years – that I honestly don’t think in hourly rates. I don’t think about sick leave. I don’t think about holiday pay owed. I must admit that the hourly rate doesn’t ever enter my thinking.

I work. I work hard because I love what I do – whether it is to write music, to write a blog, to write a book, to do a property deal, to coach a success student, to create a course, to give a speech, or to set up a marketing campaign for my hair and beauty salon.

It is so liberating to be able to get up at 4.30 am in the morning to work because you want to, or to work until 9pm at night because you have just been inspired by a fresh idea.

I currently get to choose to spend a couple of hours with my granddaughter every Tuesday morning because I am not working for an hourly rate. I get to spend most of Friday with both my daughter and granddaughter talking about business and caring for the latest beautiful addition to my family because I can. If I don’t get everything done for my business during the day I simply work late into the night.

Freedom Comes When You Know What You’re Worth

Today I am having lunch with my son. He’s paying. We will discuss his latest business venture.

This is the freedom that has come my way as a direct result of choosing to value, at a higher level, my time.

I work for three people. Me, myself and I. They are hard taskmasters. But we never have a disagreement. We work together as a cohesive team, all the way to success.

I encourage you, that at no matter what level of hourly pay you are currently receiving, to begin to set your sights much higher.

I set mine high as I scrubbed toilets and packed shelves.

Now I am seeing the dream begin to come to pass, and I am a slow learner.

You, as someone much smarter than I, can soar far beyond me. I am seeing that in my children. They have watched me make mistakes and they have learned from them. Smart kids.

Be smart yourself and ask yourself the life defining question: what am I worth?

Come up with an answer and write it down. Then get busy.
