From Illiterate Bricklayer To International Business Statesman

Peter J. Daniels, (born in 1932 in Adelaide, Australia) is an Australian life coach, writer, and professional speaker. On January 14 through 16 in 1984 I entered a motel room with one of his first published books, a Gideon Bible and a notebook with one intention – to unveil my destiny. Those three days of prayer and fasting changed my life forever.

So when I had the privilege of hearing Peter speak at a seminar in my hometown this past week, after so many years, I felt compelled to  honor this great and godly man by including his brief biography(that now covers 78 years) here in my Motivational Memo Blog.

Peter Daniels was illiterate and worked as a brick-layer’s assistant. He came from a disadvantaged background and was challenged with illiteracy in his early years. His was third generation welfare recipients, he has two alcoholic brothers, 4 fathers and 2 mothers. Many of his relatives have been in jail. He failed at every grade in school, became a bricklayer, and at 26 years of age was hopelessly in debt.

The Good Man & Woman’s Mandate

‘A good man(woman) leaves an for his(her) children’s children.’ Proverbs 13:22 NIV

If we call ourselves good, then we have been given a mandate; a command, that we are responsible to carry out. We cannot look over our shoulder and say that this is written for the other person. This has been written for you and for me.

The question is: are we up to the challenge? And what constitutes an ? Well let’s get something clear. A good man or woman will leave a good .

Personally, I’m at a point in my life where I’m yet to meet my children’s children because they haven’t been born yet, but with every passing day that day is drawing closer. So for me, it’s a great time to consider the implications of this proverb on my own life – and I trust that it will enlighten yours.

Probably the most important question to answer is: what are we to leave to our children’s children?

The Billionaire’s Obituary

I recently read a sad obituary of a billionaire who had passed on. It recorded the fact that they had been known for their ‘bullish’ dealings in business and their unsettled relationships resulting from three marriages.

Now they may have been the owner of some other fine qualities throughout their lifetime, not noted in the obituary, but for me personally – to have recorded as part of my obituary the above details, is the leaving of a sad legacy.

in life must be assessed by not just the bank balance alone, but rather by the measure and richness of the relationships developed by a life both in business, and in particular within the structure of the .

All of us are flawed, but if we can live our lives in a state of love, forgiveness, the keeping of short accounts and of faithfulness – then we are traveling on the road towards a rich and prosperous life.

Creating Wealth

Here are some great thoughts from my favourite mentor – John McGrath:

  • Figure out the rules.
  • Develop the necessary skills and implement a wealth plan today.

And here’s another powerful thought…. ‘If we can do just a bit extra each day, push a little higher and further, we will end up with massive improvement in a short time.’

Millionaire In Less Than A Minute

I was recently told that more millionaires are made in hard economic times than in good times.

They’re a little bit like a donkey I read about. They develop the ability to take a disastrous situation and turn it around into a wonderful freeing opportunity and it only takes them less than a minute to start thinking that way.

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old, that the well needed to be covered anyway and that it just wasn’t worth retrieving the donkey. So he invited all his neighbours to come over and help him.

They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quietened down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’s neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up.

Nothing can stop you from becoming a millionaire in less than a minute and from becoming successful in a second.

How can you step up into the millionaire membership in less than a minute?

Maybe change a few habits to start with.

The average self-made millionaire reads one book a month.

The average American looks at television six hours a day while the average self-made millionaire looks at less than two hours of television.

Here is what we can learn from some millionaires…

The Griffith’s founded a famous sanctuary for animals close to where I now live here on the Gold Coast. It is now called the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.

At first the Griffith’s had a little bush hut on the road frontage where they used to grow and sell flowers, particularly gladioli. When the local lorikeets discovered their flowers as a food source, they put in some beehives for honey to distract them.

Eventually they were feeding so many lorikeets that they realised they were better business than the flowers and their son, Alex, expanded the sanctuary to where it is now. It was recently reported than when Alex died he was worth in excess of fifty million dollars.

Walt Disney dropped out of school, joined the army, came home to draw cartoons, started into business with a partner and failed and sold everything to purchase a one-way ticket to California.

To his forty dollars, an imitation leather suitcase, one ill-matching suit and some drawing materials he added a dream. He started a new company, suffered setbacks, endured two nervous breakdowns, sold his car, mortgaged his house, borrowed more until he opened Disneyland, which became the biggest attraction in America and made him a multi-millionaire.

A MILLION DOLLARS MUST BE DEPOSITED FIRST IN YOUR HEAD BEFORE IT WILL EVER ARRIVE IN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT

Muhammad Ali once said, ‘ You see I learned a long time ago that being good was simply not enough. You’ve got to have imagination and you’ve got to have a dream.’

Dexter Yager, the former truck driver who built a multimillion-dollar business, wrote, ‘If the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.’

So what’s stopping you?

Nothing.

Be like the donkey and shake off whatever is holding you back and step up.

You deserve to be rich. There is nothing standing between you and a million dollars if you believe that by changing your thinking you can become a millionaire in less than a minute.
