One definition given for the word discretion is this: free will – the power of making free choices unconstrained by external agencies.
This speaks to me of freedom: the ability to act or judge on one’s own. The ability to make wise choices or decisions, and the freedom to make one’s own judgments.
I learnt this as a teenager when many of my so-called friends took up the habit of smoking. I also learnt it when these same individuals decided to use illicit drugs, engage in immorality, and choose to follow whatever the crowd was endorsing at the time. I chose another path.
However, to my utmost surprise, I then stumbled across the same pressure and resistance in religious circles, where restrictions were placed upon all from exploring certain truths found within God’s word. These were the ones, because of tradition, that they wanted to overlook or dust under the carpet. And at that time I had the choice of either satisfying the status quo, or following my heartfelt convictions. Once again I chose another path.
But what liberty comes with being true to oneself. And what persecution accompanies it at times. But what exhilaration rises within your chest as you know because you know that to be true to yourself operates on a much higher plane than that which is imposed by the masses.

To be true to yourself, you need to be a non-conformist.
We live in a world today where governments demand, organizations dictate, society insists that we should do this, do that , or come up to some standard, or perform some act, or commit to some cause.
But I say, ‘Be true to yourself’.
Follow your own convictions. Lead your own club. Direct your own organization. Yield to your heart, and do not allow yourself to be swayed, cajoled or bullied into walking a path that is not made for your footsteps.
For truly the blessing is on obedience – obedience to the call on your life. It is not about what others think. It’s about what you think, and as to what you do with what you have had apportioned to you in this lifetime.

Take a path less travelled by others and tread your own.
Oh you may have to break open virgin territory that requires the use of a machete or a front-end loader, but that is the way of the pioneer. That is the trek of the adventurer.
They don’t want to take the beaten path. They want to push out the boundaries and break down the traditions of men. They want to ask the hard questions. They refuse to accept the statement: ‘that’s the way it has always been done around here.’
When everyone else is going right, they will be going left. When everyone is going up,they will be going down. When everyone is going under, they will be going over. When everyone is queuing up behind everyone else, they’ll go and stand at the front of a new queue that they just created, because they can.

What can leadership learn from the loose cannon and the lone ranger?
The loose cannon is a person who is expected to perform a particular task, but who is out of control and dangerous. It refers to an irresponsible and reckless individual, whose behaviour endangers the group he or she belongs to.
The lone ranger in contrast is a solitary, sometimes heroic and mysterious person who is always seemingly alone in a wilderness that he does not quite call home, but alongside the lone ranger there is always his side kick Tonto riding beside him.
The challenge that many in leadership have is to clearly define the difference between a loose cannon and a lone ranger.
The loose cannon is about destruction, whereas the lone ranger is about justice.
The loose cannon is about undermining, whereas the lone ranger is about upholding.
The loose cannon is the leader of dissension, whereas the lone ranger is the leader of discussion.

Throughout the years that I’ve inhabited planet earth, my battle has consistently been to maintain a spirit of peace – a state of calm, and a stability that is driven from within, and that remains unaffected by what is happening without.
There are so many forces – particularly in this media-driven generation – that would seek to draw away our attention from our internal mission and our God-given assignment.
And it is for that reason that we must constantly guard our personal radar from being jammed or interfered with. For true reception rises from the heart and soul of man, and what a tragedy it would be to wake up at the end of a lifetime to suddenly realize that you have been playing another tune, and for that reason have been living a discordant life and far below your potential.
Each of us have been dispatched a unique tune that we’ve been created to hum, to sing, or to play – and one of life’s greatest enjoyments is to embark upon the journey of discovery that ultimately unveils the beautiful melody – the one of a kind orchestration- that is solely ours. It cannot be stolen. It cannot be faithfully copied or imitated. It is ours alone, and it is for us alone to sing.
And it is in that zone that true peace can be attained, and true fulfillment and satisfaction achieved.
