‘The mind is like a muscle and it can be developed.’ Peter J. Daniels
I heard Peter speak again this weekend at my local church, and it’s twenty four years since I first came in contact with the author of that quote. For three days I shut myself away in a motel room with three books – one book written by Peter J. Daniels, the Gideon Bible, and a blank notebook.
During those three days I filled that notebook and mapped out my future, including the businesses that I believed I would develop in the years to come. At the time I was not yet a businessman, and I was unaware of any businessmen being in my recent known ancestry. So it was virgin ground that I was entering, and experience has been my greatest teacher. This was the beginning of my mind muscle development that has continued to this very day.

‘Go deep, work hard and always be open to learning.’ David Rockefeller Jnr
There is no pill for success. There is no shortcut. There is no fast track – well not for a lasting success. We have all seen cases where fast success has in a few years been derailed. What we want to experience is a success that lasts a lifetime, and that is passed on to the next generation.
And that is why Rockefeller’s statement is so powerful.
So let’s take a closer look at what it will take to lead a successful life.

‘Study to show yourself approved…’ *
I spend at least one hour a day in study. The busier I get, the greater I find the need to dig deeper through the habit of study.
And what do I study?
1. I Study Where My Passion Lies
The bulk of my study time is devoted to my passion. For me my passion lies deeply entrenched in the writings of the philosophers throughout the ages. When I come across a philosopher who impacts my thoughts and my heart, I make it my mission to discover whom they read – and before long I am introduced to the company of those who formed the basis of modern thought as we know it today.
When I read I read to be inspired – and it is from there that I build my own structures – for they are the springboards from which I leap ever forward in my own thinking so that I can continue to be an effective influencer upon those who happen to come into my sphere of influence. As one who seeks to inspire others to excel, I must first be inspired . For me to water others I must first be watered. And this is where I drink deeply – daily.

From the time I was a small child I have read the scriptures, and yet I am amazed, as I continue to dig into this ancient treasure, that I am ever discovering new things.
Take tonight for example…
While reading Matthew 14 I stumbled across the numbers 5, 2, 5,000 and 12. This was signified by 5 loaves, 2 fish, 5,000 men plus women and children, and then when they were all fed there were 12 baskets of leftover fragments filled.
But then I read Matthew 15 and discovered the numbers 7, 3(few), 4,000 and 7. This represented 7 loaves, 3 fish, 4,000 men plus women and children, and then when they were all fed 7 full baskets of leftover fragments remained.
Now you might respond to this observation with, ‘So what?’
