Few Words

Do you like this story?

‘The one who knows much says little; an understanding person remains calm. Even dunces who keep quiet are thought to be wise; as long as they keep their mouth shut, they’re smart.’ Proverbs 17:27,28 (The Message)

There are those who love the sound of their own voice, and then there are those who are wise.

I listened to an interview the other day where the interviewer, an unknown author, throughout their interview with a bestselling author, shared, and at times interrupted his interviewee with his own exploits as a non-author. Very sad.

Everyone we come in contact with is an expert in something, and our role should always be to learn. Now you can only learn if you listen. And if and when the opportunity arises in the conversation to share what’s on your heart, then of course speak. But if it doesn’t, then keep quiet.

I personally love practicing the art of deflection in conversation. This is what I do. When asked a question, I briefly answer, but then quickly respond with another question myself – because it is my aim, by the end of the conversation, to leave my conversation partner feeling so much better about themselves – just because they talked with me.

So learn to be wise by using few words. And then follow up your few words with an abundance of great actions.
